White Dresses Boutique LOVES White Rabbit Studios
Our little Southern bridal shops are so excited to introduce our newest column - a vendor spotlight on some of the most talented creatives in the wedding industry! And we couldn't be more excited to share one of our favorite friends and photographers, WHITE RABBIT STUDIOS, with you for our very first installment!
Over three years ago, Kara and Ella set out to enlist some of the most talented vendors in the Alabama bridal industry for our first photo shoots for our Huntsville Bridal Shop. One of the very first vendors we came across was Ashley of White Rabbit Studios. Ashley's photographs are out of this world and her amazing personality just is the icing on the cake! We feel so lucky to get to work with her, but even more lucky to call her a friend! We sat down with Ashley to learn about her business, to share about photographing weddings, and to help our brides learn about the amazing offerings that White Rabbit Studios has for Alabama brides, Tennessee brides, and brides from across the United States!
Q: How did you get into the photography industry?
A: Growing up, I always had an appreciation for all thins artsy and unique. My parents encouraged my growth, experimentation, and supported my "wild hair" ideas. Before high school, my dad gifted me the camera he learned on and used throughout his life - an Olympus OM10. He taught me the ins and outs of the camera and the art of film. When I left to shoot my first roll, he told me how important it was to "shoot what you love." That has carried me throughout my first days as a hobby photographer, to helping me craft my eye, to the personal work I'm always curating, and of course into the wedding industry. I am a sap by nature, and when I am surrounded by love I thrive!
Q: How did you get into the wedding industry?
A: I shot my first wedding after my mom's friend, Rhiannon, had her photographer bail (without notice) a week before their wedding date. She had seen personal photography images (mainly landscapes and such) I had taken and asked if I would be interested. I was absolutely terrified, yet very excited at the opportunity. I loved every single minute of the wedding day! After hearing how much she loved her wedding photos, I thought it might be a "fun adventure" to see what would happen if I put it out there that I was a photographer for hire! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would fall head over heels in love with photographing weddings! It's riveting, blissful, and such a meaningful occupation for me!
Q: Do you shoot film, digital, or both at weddings?
A: I prefer to shoot with film. Although I love the convenience and appreciate the mechanics behind digital photography, there is something about the tonal range, the quality, and the lasting imprint with film that doesn't quite compare to digital. You can find both in my camera bag with my main "workhorse" being the film cameras. The digital camera is there for backup and if I need to push my ISO for the intimate, low-lighting reception coverage.
Q: What type of bride do you normally cater to?
A: The brides that most often connect with my work are women who have a strong lust for the wild and free side of love. The ones that can recall the exact moment(s) they fell in love with their spouse. They want this free-spirited love harnessed in their wedding photos. I love to help them plan their day in a way that unfolds organically by utilizing the natural light and the natural love from the day.
Q: What is your favorite part of a wedding?
A: That is a hard one as there are so many moments that make me swoon! First looks are often tear jerkers for me. I also love when the couple is announced right after the first kiss - that feeling of relief (from planning, organizing, and thinking about the ceremony) and excitement (time to start the adventure of life together) is an incredible one to capture!
Q: What are some tips and suggestions for brides on choosing a wedding photographer?
A: It's very important to connect with your photographer! Often times, they will be around you more than your future spouse during your wedding day! If there is a way to meet or Skype with them before your wedding day, I would suggest doing so as it is a great way to get a feel for each other. You can never over-share with your photographer - I encourage my couples to tell me anything and everything about their day - basically, if they need to gush - I'm their girl! I think it's also important to work with your photographer on the timeline of the day. If you are hiring a planner to help with such things, maybe reach out and ask your photographer if they have suggestions in addition to what the planner is thinking. Everyone loves to work together to ensure that your wedding day is stress free and just as wondrous as you've been dreaming!
